Aquinas Academy Hosting Community-Wide Art Contest and Art Show

Aquinas Academy is hosting a community-wide art contest of Westmoreland County landmarks and points of interest. The selected subjects for the contest include locations such as the Palace Theatre, Ft. Ligonier, the Westmoreland Museum, and Saint Vincent College. The contest is open to students (K-12), college students, and adults. In each of the six age groups, participants have the opportunity to win a $100 cash prize, have their artwork exhibited at a community art show, and have their artwork featured in a 2017 calendar. To help children in grades K-6 create artwork for the contest, Pottery Playhouse is hosting canvas painting classes for the featured landmarks.

For more information and to enter online, visit www.CelebrateWestmoreland.org.  There is a $10 entry fee and entries must be submitted by June 15th. Proceeds benefit education at Aquinas Academy.

Approximately one hundred of the winning pieces will be exhibited at an art show at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center on Thursday, September 22nd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This exciting event will bring together artists of all ages to celebrate our area's rich history and its continued dedication to the arts. The winning artwork will also be featured in a 2017 lottery calendar that will be for sale at the art show and throughout the community. Two thousand copies of the calendar will be distributed. Opportunities are available for local businesses to place an advertisement or coupon in the calendar.

The Celebrate Westmoreland Art Contest was inspired by the recent renaissance of the Greensburg art community, evinced by the renovations to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the construction of the new Seton Hill Arts Building, and the creation of the Incubator for the Arts by the Westmoreland Cultural Trust. In addition to supporting education at Aquinas Academy, the Celebrate Westmoreland Project aims to create further excitement about art in the community and showcase the unique points of interest in Westmoreland County.
