Somerset County intends to close the Big Savage Tunnel on the Great Allegheny Passage for the winter season on Thursday, Nov. 30. This seasonal closure, performed annually, protects the lining of the tunnel from freeze-thaw cycles brought on by high winds, cold temperatures, and wet, snowy conditions at high elevation.

Please note that there is no detour, and local roads are narrow and treacherous. Please plan your winter excursions elsewhere on the GAP. The tunnel will reopen by early April, once snow has melted and temperatures are steadily rising. A specific date will be posted on the GAP website once it is selected.
