SOMERSET, PA – The Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial (Friends) are awarding funds to school districts within Western Pennsylvania to support transportation costs to Flight 93 National Memorial. Regional school districts are encouraged to apply for transportation funding to visit the memorial and participate in PA standard-based educational programming developed for grade levels 4-12. This funding is available thanks to generous grants from Pirates Charities and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The program outline and transportation scholarship applications are available for download on the Friends’ education page.

The Flight 93 National Memorial Learning Center is a classroom where teachers, students, park rangers and volunteers explore the story of Flight 93 and September 11, 2001. Programming launched in 2016 with 658 fourth grade students participating in a pilot program. In 2019, over 8,000 students were educated at Flight 93 National Memorial on the story of Flight 93, the memorial’s design and importance in society, as well as how the youth can utilize the ideas of leadership, democracy and tributes within their own lives and communities.

The goal of the funding is to continue educational initiatives targeted toward the next generation of students who were born after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks that took place 19 years ago. The Friends’ Learning Center Coordinator, Danielle Miller, will be responsible for overseeing scholarship applications and facilitating education programs in coordination with the National Park Service Education Program Specialist. The Learning Center Coordinator staff position was added due to an increased demand for educational programming at the memorial and a goal to increase capacity in the number of youths educated at Flight 93.

Additionally, the Friends are designated as an approved education organization through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) and are able to accept donations from EITC approved funders that will directly support education programs at Flight 93 National Memorial.
