Greensburg, PA (May 4, 2021) - Westmoreland Cultural Trust continues to expand its Wings Across Westmoreland countywide art initiative with a new installation in Youngwood. A set of wings highlighting Youngwood’s unique history and culture will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, May 8 at 11 AM. The artwork will be located along the Five Star Trail at Depot Street.

“Now is the perfect time to unveil our next location for Wings Across Westmoreland. With the weather turning warmer, people are anxious to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The placement of the artwork on the Five Star Trail is an ideal location – allowing easy accessibility, not only to visitors along the trail, but also to Westmoreland County Community College students, local residents, and the public,” stated Westmoreland Cultural Trust CEO April Kopas.

The Trust worked in partnership with the Youngwood Borough and Youngwood Cultural Committee members Chairman William L. Cowherd, Rene Hajdukiewicz, Ashley Nye, and Linda Marino to conceptualize the wings detailing the history and highlights of Youngwood. The wings will feature recognizable landmarks such as The Veteran’s Memorial, Youngwood Railroad Station, Westmoreland County Community College, Youngwood Fire Department, and other areas of interest that pay tribute to the rich culture of the community.

The artwork for the wings was designed by former WCT Incubator for the Arts artist Patrick Mahoney and his daughter Riley Mahoney who created the first pair of wings located in the Trust’s Art in the Alley (next to The Palace Theatre). The popularity of the wings inspired Westmoreland Cultural Trust to expand the wings to other Westmoreland County communities, capturing what makes each town unique while uniting the county’s heritage through art.

The Youngwood Wings are made possible through funding from Youngwood President, Scott Palmquist and his wife, Lori Palmquist, in addition to a grant from the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation.

“We have lived in Youngwood since 1987 and want to give back to the community,” explained supporters Scott and Lori Palmquist. “We love Youngwood and want to do our part in making it beautiful and a great place to raise a family.”

Representatives from Westmoreland Cultural Trust and Youngwood Borough Council will be in attendance to unveil the new public art.

WCT’s Wings Across Westmoreland will continue to grow in 2021 with plans to expand the project to Vandergrift, Mount Pleasant, and other Westmoreland County cities. Current wings locations include Greensburg (Art in the Alley), Overly’s Country Christmas, Jeannette (Sobel’s Obscure Brewery), and Ligonier (Town Hall).
