Heritage Hike: Johnstown Canal Basin
A ranger guided hike around the Johnstown Canal Basin area will take place on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at 2:00 pm. To make a required reservation, please call the Visitor Center at 814-886-6150.
Johnstown's location is near the western end of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Participants will learn about why Johnstown was an important town along the Main Line Canal.
The hike will highlight locations in downtown that were part of the canal basin and even a few buildings that are still standing from the canal days. The tour will take place rain or shine.

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located 10 miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off the Gallitzin exit of US Highway 22. The park preserves portions of the first railroad crossing over the Allegheny Mountains. This unique railroad connected the eastern and western divisions of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal.
