Heritage Hike: Summit Level 

A Summit Level hike is Sunday, September 17, 2023, at 2:00 pm. This park ranger led hike is 3-miles in length along the Summit Level of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. The hike goes from the head of Inclined Plane No. 6 to the location of where the Summit Hotel was in Summitville near the head of Inclined Plane 5. Reservations are required for this free hike and can be made by calling the Visitor Center at 814-886-6150.

The Summit Level was the highest point that the Allegheny Portage Railroad crossed the Allegheny Mountains. Participants will learn about the Summit Level, inclines and levels of the railroad, how the railroad operated, and more! Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring water. The hike will take place rain or shine.

We are located 10 miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off the Gallitzin exit of US Highway 22. The park preserves portions of the first railroad crossing over the Allegheny Mountains. This unique railroad connected the eastern and western divisions of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal.
