Path of the Flood Hike, Part 1
South Fork, PA- Join park rangers for an 11-mile hike that follows the Path of the Flood on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 10:00 am. The hike begins at the South Abutment near the remains of the dam and continues to Franklin. Reservations are required. Space is limited due to shuttling. Please call the Visitor Center at 814-886-6171 to sign up for this free hike.
The hike will go through the towns of South Fork and Mineral Point. Participants will learn about those towns before and after the flood. A few of the additional topics include the Conemaugh Viaduct, telegraph messages, and people who played an active role in the events of May 31, 1889.
Participants will park in the lot near the South Abutment located on South Abutment Road off of Route 869. At the conclusion of the hike, a shuttle will bring hikers back to the parking lot.
The hike covers moderately difficult terrain. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water. There will be a brief rest stop about seven miles into the hike.
