Spirits of the Staple Bend Tunnel 

The 15th annual Spirits of the Staple Bend Tunnel tours are Saturday, October 28, 2023. These free tours are family friendly. Reservations are required due to limited space on the bus. Please call 814-886-6150 to sign up!

Tour times are 6:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 8:00 pm. A short bus ride takes participants to the tunnel where they will visit different stations and meet historic characters from the days of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. The tour takes participants through the Staple Bend Tunnel, which is 901 feet long. 

The tour requires about a half mile of walking. Each tour is approximately 50 minutes in length. Luminaries will help light the way through the first railroad tunnel in America!

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located 10 miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off the Gallitzin exit of US Highway 22. The park preserves portions of the first railroad crossing over the Allegheny Mountains. This unique railroad connected the eastern and western divisions of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal.
