After winning the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills, Arnold Palmer and his business associates were brainstorming logo ideas in Ligonier, PA. This logo would be used on clothing, business stationery, golf clubs, and more. After much frustration, Arnie went to take a walk, but discovered it was raining outside. He saw a woman getting out of her car with a multicolored umbrella, and thus the idea became the legendary, red, yellow, white, and green umbrella.

On your way through his hometown of Latrobe on Route 30, there are two classic Arnold Palmer umbrellas to look out for. When leaving Latrobe and traveling on 30 towards Ligonier, the symbol can be seen on the 982 bridge, with the words “The Birthplace of a Legend- Arnold Palmer.” Also on 30, the logo is displayed on Arnold Palmer Motors.

Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve

Visit the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, a 50-acre reserve at Saint Vincent College. Over 25 years ago, a group of individuals anticipated the rapid development of Latrobe and the surrounding areas and wanted to protect the small businesses in the area. Winnie Palmer, the late wife of Arnold Palmer, was one of those individuals. She sought to protect the scenery and view of the Basilica and SVC campus. Her family continued to work on this project after her death in 1999.  Saint Vincent College donated 25 acres in addition to the 25 acres to ensure the beautiful view of the campus would be preserved. The focal point of the reserve is the charming barn, now the Environmental Learning Barn.

Have you ever had an ice-cold “Arnold Palmer?” According to Arnold Palmer, he often drank iced tea with lemonade at home. In 1960 at the U.S. Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, he ordered this drink at a bar. A woman at the bar overheard him and asked for the Arnold Palmer drink, and the “Arnold Palmer” was born. Aqueous at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort serves an Arnold Palmer cake for dessert.
